Hi all,

This laptop has suddenly gotten slow. There is sometimes a lag before responding such that it can take a good few seconds before typed letters appear on the screen. It's gotten slower loading internet pages too.

I ran the Malware cleaning guide and so far everything has come up clean.

System information:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

On my other laptop, I had help from Geeks to Go and it cleaned up beautifully! You guys are amazing!

No problem. I think you might have made a typo with this:

I assume you meant 1.90 GHz? No worries, just making sure.

You said you followed the Malware cleaning guide, so I assume you ran TFC Cleaner. If you have not, please do so, as cleaning out old TEMP files will speed up your system dramatically.

When is the last time you ran a defragmentation program?

Lets start with a few basics.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:
It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

Yes, I don't know enough to know the difference and I just left out the decimal.


So, I ran all the programs and the slowness is still there. (I redid TFC just in case, too).

Yes, to us geeks, the decimal makes a big difference.

Okay, so you ran through some basic maintenance functions, including cleaning out junk files and defragmenting your hard drive, and your symptoms are still present. Let's take a look at some more information about your computer.

• What is the make and model of your computer? How long have you owned/operated it?

Lets also try a check disk.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Lets us know if it finds any errors.

Lets see if we can get some system information.

Download and install PC Wizard 2010

Run the program and it will analyze your computer and then display the results.
In the upper left hand corner click on the floppy icon.
You will get a save as screen.
Change the range bullet "only this selection" to be "selected category".
Make sure that text is selected for format.
Click on ok and you will be given a spot to save it to.

Attach it to your response.

The computer is a Dell Vostro 1000, AMD Athlon 64 X2. We've had it since 2008, I think.

Hi,

After I ran chkdsk, I came back into the room and and the computer was just displaying the desktop. I suppose this means it booted back to windows, but I don't know how to tell if chkdsk found any problems.

After doing allthis I am betting that the swap file has either bene changed to a smaller size r there is a process running thats eating processor speed so it stime to check the runningprocesses and seeif ther is one that s showing more than 50 percnet of the total ofhte local drive
to do this
crtl/alt/del
whenthe window comes up clickthe proceses tab and looka the second list and it should give you usage in Kilobytes anything thats shwing more than 10000 K processor could be anissue
expecially if its soemthign you dont recognize
