Hi, myrti. Nice to see you.

Things are almost un-changed. I copied and ran your batch file, to flush the DNS and reset the host file. Still no connectivity - Server not found.

I still have access to the router, with the same cable connection that works well, on the Acer back up. Just no connection from the router to the internet. That is why I suspect a corrupted system, or settings.

I turned on some Windows features that were off, that I thought were on:
Internet Information Services
Remote Differential Compression
Removable Storage Management
RIP Listener
Simple TCPIP Services (echo, daytime, etc.)
SNMP feature
TFTP Client
Telnet Client
Telnet Server

Still off:
Indexing
Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server
Windows DFS Replication Service
Windows Meeting Space

On re-booting, a message: This computer is connected to an unidentified network.
The Network and Sharing Center shows the local connection, but has a red x in between the local connection and the internet.

Windows Network Diagnostics can not resolve the problem.

The status of the Local Area Connection: Reports "Identifying", while the Properties reports:
IPv4 Connectivity: Local
IPv6 Connectivity: Limited

I have been using Firefox since before version 1.0.
I inadvertently acquired IE 8, during an update, and have not tried to uninstall it.
I generally try to avoid using IE ...

After installing Firefox 3.5, I updated to 3.5.1, 3.5.2, 3.0 and finally, reverted to the latest update to version 2. Nothing worked, and I now have version 3.6.3, which does not work, either.

If my recall is right, the restore function did not restore connectivity, and the date is long out of range, now.

Hi,

on a rather long stretch it could be a IPv4/IPv6 issue. I've had that kill my internet connection before.

You said that your Wifi was working fine? What do you mean by public, does it not work in your home or does your router not have wifi capacities?

  • Could you please go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.
  • Right click on Local Area Connection & click properties option.
  • Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
  • Click OK & close dialog box.

Reboot and let me know if that changes anything in your problems.

Hi, myrti .

Status: Not Connected for IPv4 & IPv6, after unchecking IPv6 and re-booting.
So, I no longer have access to the router, much less the internet.

Windows can not find any networks.
The LED light in the socket, comes on when I plug in the cable.

I rebooted, again, but still have no connection.
Under Start / Settings / Network Connections:
Local Area Connection reports: Enabled.

Below are the all the settings:

Connection Details:
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
DHCP is enabled
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 168.254.55.11
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
IPv4 Default Gateway: No entries
IPv4 DNS Server: No entries
IPv4 WINS Server: No entries
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: Yes

Under Properties / Networking / Client for Microsoft Networks / Properties
The entry was empty. I selected Windows Locator, in lieu ofDCE Cell Directory Service, from the drop down menu.

Under Properties / Networking / Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties

Under the General tab:
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically

The Advanced window

Under IP Settings tab:
IP addresses shows DHCP is Enabled.
Under Default gateways, the Gateway box is empty.
Automatic metric box is checked.

The DNS tab -
DNS server addresses, in order of use: The box is empty.
Below this box, The following three settings are applied to all connections with TCP/IP enabled. For resolution of unqualified names:
The radio button selects: Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
The box below this radio button is checked: Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix.
The section below that: DNS suffix for the connection: empty field .
The box below this is checked: Register this connection's addresses in DNS

The WINS tab -
WINS addresses, in order of use: The box is empty.
Next - If LMHOSTS lookup is enabled, it applies t all connections for which TCP/IP is enabled.
The box is checked: Enable LMHOSTS lookup
NetBIOS setting:
The radio button is checked, for Default:
Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Alternate Configuration tab:
The radio button is selected: Automatic private IP address.

Summary of Local Area Connection Properties:
All are checked, except TCP/IPv6.

Client for Mircorsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IPv4
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder.

The configuration options for Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Properties:
The general tab reports: Location: PCI bus 3, device 0, function 0.
This device is working properly.

Under the Advanced tab:
Locally Administered Address: 198.168.30.1
I wonder if the Locally Administered Address should be: 192.168.30.1

(The router is Linksys Cable/DSL Router - Etherfast BEFSR41).

Windows can not resolve the problem.
And, neither can I ...

Hi,

so do I understand correctly that things got worse after you disabled IPv6? Could you then please try to disable IPv4 and reenable IPv6.

Do you know the IP of your router? Are you familiar with the Hillsborough County Public Schools? Do you have an internet access through them?

regards myrti.

Hi,

At boot up, Network Connections indicate a connection to the Local Area Network.
Status: "Identifying"

IPv4 status: Local
IPv6 status: Limited. This was unchecked, in the properties.

Network and Sharing Center portrays the red "x", in between the local connection and the internet. The Local connection is portrayed with the Identifying graphic, indicating local connectivity, only.

After selecting IPv6 and un-selecting IPv4, a yellow triangle appeared in between the Dell notebook and the Local Connection.
The red "x" was still portrayed in between the Local Connection and the internet.

All attempts to connect to several web sites: Firefox Can't Find the Server ...

On re-booting, there was no change.
There remains a yellow triangle in between the Dell notebook and the Local Connection.
The red "x" was still portrayed in between the Local Connection and the internet.

Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Status: Unidentified Network.
IPv4 & IPv6 Connectivity: Limited.

After restoring IPv4 and un-selecting IPv6,
Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Status: Unidentified Network.

At one time, I subscribed to Verizon Wireless, for internet access. There were some changes made, to get it working. But, the key change was made at Verizon.

We do not have internet access through Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Belarc Advisor indicates Communications / Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller:
Primary Auto IP Address: 168.254.55.111/16
DHCP Server: None Reported

Under Services: DHCP Client starts up automatically; Status: Started.
Peer Networking entries are disabled.
All else appears normal.

The Acer notebook backup: Belarc Advisor reports, using the same router cable connection:
primary Auto IP Address: 192.168.1.102 / 24
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Dhcp Server: 192.168.1.1

Windows can not resolve the problem.

Primary Auto IP Address: 168.254.55.111/16
DHCP Server: None Reported

This is probably related to your problem. If we could get DHCP to take over the problems might go away.

Could you please go into the properties of IPv4 and onto the Advanced window

Under IP Settings tab:
Under Default gateways, type in 192.168.1.1
Under The DNS tab -
Under DNS server addresses, in order of use: 192.168.1.1

Let me know if that helps.

Hi, myrti.

Sorry to take so long to reply.

After making these changes, and before rebooting,, the systray icon indicates connectivity.
Server Not Found. Firefox can't find the Server at ...

Under Network Connections / Local Area Connection: Status is "Identifying".
Local Area Connection / Status / General tab:
IPv4 Connectivity: Local

Windows can not resolve the problem.

On rebooting, the systray icon indicates no connectivity, with a red x on the icon.
Windows can not resolve the problem.

The Network and Sharing Center graphic, indicates that the router is missing.
The new settings do not seem to remain, in the Default gateways: 192.168.1.1,
The box is now empty.

Network Connection Details / Auto-configuration IPv4 address: 169.254.55.111/16
This seems to differ from the Belarc Advisor report on the Acer Backup notebook:
primary Auto IP Address: 192.168.1.102 / 24

Belarc Advisor Report - Dell notebook - 5-16-10:
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
primary Auto IP Address: 169.254.55.111 / 16
Dhcp Server: none responded

Physical Address: 00:1D:09:B4:10:17

Hi,

you have a Broadcam Wireless Manager running. Could you check the settings in said program? It might be overwriting the settings we tried to set manually through Windows.

Are you aware of any other network manager installed on your system?

Hi, myrti.

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller / Properties / Advanced tab:
I modified the manually entered value, in the Locally Administered Address
from 198.168.30.1 to 192.168.1.1

For a few minutes:
Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Status: Network 6.

Then, the connection to the Router disappeared. The systray icon indicates no network, and Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Status: Enabled.

By Contrast, the Acer backup notebook (Network 3) displays 13 items in the Broadcom Controller Properties / Advanced tab:

WOL Speed. . . . . . . . . . . .. . ... . . . . Auto

No Connectivity, on re-boot.
Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Status: Enabled.
Local Area Connection Status / IPv4: Not Connected

The difference between 5 items and 13 items, looks like something is missing from components of the Operating System,. Not to mention my brain.

Hi,

at this point I'm not sure that I can help you any further. It seems that you have a network client installed which will restore the old settings or that something else is off.

I would suggest that you post a new thread in Networking and get help from someone that is more familiar with these kind of issues.

Let me know if you haven't received a reply after two days and I'll nudge one of the tech staff people to take a look at it.
