What are the possible causes of lost files
on downloads?

Only one I can think of is if the download is infected with malware, and depending on your real-time antivirus settings, your av could be automatically quarantining or deleting it.

Failing that, are you looking in the right place for the stuff you downloaded?

If you have a laptop and your connection gets lost, then that could result in lost files. Plus if you download it to an folder you usually don't, and forget then that's another case.

The files I downloaded are for an addon for microsoft flight sim 2004.
The file is FSHotSeat.It came as a zip,used windows to unzip.One of the files that are missing is the error.log,don not know if others are also.The support site
is of no use at all,just keep telling me go to the program folder and look
at the error.log file,try another down load site,try the upgrade file,so
on and so on.

it will Automatically identify and find drivers for your system's hardware and system your software are evaluated.
For example: chipset, graphics driver version, operating system version.
