For the last few days, Avira has been telling me to update, and Windows is telling me that my antivirus software is out-of-date. SO, naturally, I'm clicking the "update" button when it asks me, but every time it starts, it will say "Status: Scanning for updates..." for about three minutes, and then "An error has occurred in the file download". I click "Report", and this is what I get:

[UPDLIB] [ERROR] Download manager: An error occurred inside the WinINet library.
[UPD] [INFO] Downloading of 'http://perspeak.avir.../idx/master.idx' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\TEMP\UPDATE\idx\master.idx'.

That is repeated many, many times, and at the end it says:

[UPD] [ERROR] Generation of update structure failed. UpdateLib delivers error 537.

I have absolutely no clue what's going on or how to correct it. If there is a way I can do this without reinstalling Avira or anything like that, that would be terrific. Maybe my firewall is blocking it or something? I have Windows XP, and a Dell Dimension C521. Thanks so much for your help!

If there is a way I can do this without reinstalling Avira

My first advice would actually be to re-install Avira.
Any specific reason why you don't want to re-install it?

Regards,
Olrik

Well, actually, it's a little more than that, Mikeme. You see, because now that I've removed it and am reinstalling, I've run into yet another complication. (Although it could just be the same one that was not allowing me to update)

I'm in the process of installing Avira, and after the option registration step, I'm clicking "Next" to continue, and this message keeps popping up:

ERROR

A secure internet connection is required to activate the product (SSL encrypted). This could not be established. Please address the following issues and repeat the product activation.

- Ensure that the Internet is generally accessible
- Ensure that the system data is correct
- Check you modem connection if you are using one
- Ensure that the application fact.exe has access to the Internet and will not be blocked by a firewall

Is is possible that my firewall is just f***ing this all up?

Ugh, I'm so annoyed that I don't have a Mac right now. I want $1200 to fall from the sky so badly...

I just downloaded Avira free version this morning onto a computer I am working on that was compromised by virus/malware. I had no problem at all. If you think it is your firewall, why not just turn it off while making the attempt to download/install? Of course it cold be a corrupt download you have. I would get my download of Avira from their website.

Just tried it with the firewall off, and I got the same result. And it IS from the Avira website.

JackBullet, are you still having this issue? Today for the first time ever when I brought my computer out of hibernation after work my Avira didn't update automatically and I received the same windows message "Your Anti-virus is out of date, Click Here to Update". I did so and everything worked fine. I have a feeling their servers were down or some other glitch occurred today.

You could always try a diff antivirus software, and see how you get along. When I`m not suggesting Avira free, I suggest Avast free, also very good, found here: http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download

I experienced the same thing on my VM earlier today.

I concur with Ferrari's analysis. I'll run some more tests tonight and keep an eye open the company's news feed. :)

And don't get a Mac. They're over-priced eggshells. But that's just my opinion. :)

Just downloaded Avast, and it seems to be working fine! It updated and everything. I gave Avira another try, but kept getting the same problem about a "secure connection". Thanks guys!
