which movie file format is best ?

hello i have converted all my movies to wmv format and they are ok but size is about 1.2 gb
can you please suggest another format which is just as good but smaller in size ?
i have seen things about h.264 or mkv,i am using winavi but it only converts to wmv,rm or avi so do you know of a better converter program as well ?

Apple seems to think so, as does the international DVB. Give it a go and see for yourself.
