Hi Guys,
Me again, a little different from the memory and hard drive.

What I would like to know is, what do you consider to be the
best or very good applications to keep on your computer,
for cleaning up files, defraging, to removing spyware, etc. etc....

I have XP Home And XP Pro.......
They both have AVG. 9.0 Free edition. Never had any problems with this Anti-Virus. I use the Windows Defrag.
This is only thing I have at the moment.

Undecided between some of these things and if there should be any other things to add and which ones.....

Windows Defender Beta
Erunt
ATF-Cleaner
CCleaner
Cleanup
Auslogics Defrag.

Avg free is a good anti virus. The only problem is that on some systems it has become a resource hog.
I had to dump it and use Avira anti virus. Another good anti virus is Avast.
Just don't have more than 1 anti virus scanner.

I prefer Zone alarm but others prefer comodo. Comodo for me was to intense (I did not like the interface).

I would use erunt for the registry back up. It creates 1 everytime you boot up.

Auslogics defrag.

Add MBAM (malware bytes antimalware) for malware
Add SuperantiSpyware for spyware.

Everest is only a program to check what you have on your system. We use it to get info on a system to help posters.

In addition to the above recommendations: Keep "Windows Defender" (doesn't hurt), dump "Ad-Aware", (don't know what "Cleanup" is), and add "Win Patrol" (also free) to the mix. Also recommend using the "WOT" (web-of-trust) add-on in both IE and Firefox, and the "noscript" add-on in Firefox.

Visit "Windows Update" the second Tuesday of every month and get at least all of the updates marked "Critical". Recommend getting all the ones marked "Important" as well.

Oh, and don't forget to use the "Secunia Online Software Inspector", at least monthly, to make sure your other programs are up-to-date.

throw in spywareblaster and MVP hosts file as well...
go here and get the MVP hosts file
it will speed up webpage load times because it redirects any ad site/s its trying to connect to right back to your computer...
add that to a lot of skepticism and a little common sense while web surfing and you should be good to go

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.

Only thing I would like to know is:

Do I need the same from different sources of the same type program?
Like 2 anti-spyware from different sites, or 2 anti-malware from different sites, or 2 different cleaners, etc. etc.

Just want to know before I add programs I may not need.

You do NOT want two programs that: 1) stay active in memory at all times [like most anti-virus and software firewalls do], and 2) both do pretty much the same exact thing.

For example, let's say AV-123 is fixing to quarantine yet another infected file by moving it into its "C:\AV-123_Quarantined" folder. But, you also have AV-XYZ running and as soon as it spotted all of the infected files in the "C:\AV-123_Quarantined" folder it up and deleted the entire folder(!). Your AV-123 is fixing to scream bloody murder, and/or crash, and/or no telling what other kind of mess it might make.

(That'd be similar to inviting one potato-chip-munching girlfriend in while your other girlfriend is mopping the entry way floor. [Doh?!] You'd better duck and run. There's fixing to be one [bleep] of a mess. )

Since both will likely have different ideas about what goes where, recommend only using one.

Yes.

You can use both ... but only one at a time of course.

ATF Cleaner. CCleaner cleans more than needs to be cleaned, and has the registry cleaner component as well. CCleaner also doesn't always clear all the temp files effectively. Note, however, that ATF Cleaner does not support all browsers. You also might want to uncheck the options to clear cookies and prefetch.

Hello,
Just want your opinion on what would be better....
I need help setting up these programs.
Haven't went in to all yet, but will.
Some ask if I want to add to start-up menu.

AVG. 9.0--------I have this to scan everyday at start-up.

Where should these be put,
in a folder to be run at certain times,
at start-up, etc.?

MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware:

SpywareBlaster--Win Patrol

Windows Defender--ATF Cleaner

I also have ERUNT in the programs area.
