Here is my log file. I have no idea what going on, or how this happened, but I need some help! Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide for me!

I am infected with something, since entries in the registry continue to "pop up" out of nowhere, and I cannot specify a startpage other than "http://www.startsearches.net/"

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

You Have a CoolWebSearch Infection.
Please Download CoolWebShredder, from http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=17 , Extract it & run the program. Click the Next Button & let it scan. Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

HijackThis is not "fixing" these files...nothing happens when I "fix" them; they remain on the list, and the "CoolWebSearch Infection" remains.

CWShredder reports: "CoolWebSearch was not found on this system."

I followed the instructions, and no luck.

What else can I do?

first, it seems as if you didnt' get the whole log pasted, could you please post a new log?

Second, prior to posting the log, please make sure word wrap is turned off on your notepad text editor. to do this click on format and remove the checkmark.

Reboot your PC.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

I am continuing to play with this. First, I tried everything I could think of in safe mode. After reboot normally, this is a log before any application, other than HJT was launched.

Oh yeah, About:buster reports no problems, nothing found during scan. As far as I can tell, it did nothing.

please run this online virus scan:

ActiveScan

This has to be done with Internet explorer as it relies on the ActiveX components to work.

Then post a copy of that scans log with a new log from Hijack This

This hijacking spyware will not allow me to run this scan.

Activating the scan opens a new window which starts small, presents http://www.startsearches.net, and then maximizes to full screen.

No scan is taking place.

Would it be possible to get a list of potential solutions all at once to attempt to expediate this purging? These incremental failures are becoming quite frustrating.

I am afraid to log on anywhere because of this spyware, and I am losing valuable time. I will nuke the OS if required, but would rather not, you know?

ok, I did a little research.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

first we need to disable Microsofts anti-spy tool.
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

ok - I am currently scanning @ ActiveScan...life continues, so I must step out...same difference anyway; that scan took a LONG time before I interrupted it earlier...I have many drives on line, and I could not figure out how to limit scanning to main primary drive...I will report back in a few hours with scan results and new HJT log.

ok, OMG, this scan took all night to run.

It looks like you broke the chain, though. Thanks for all your help. My innocent files are pleased they were spared from needless irradication.

I removed the majority of the resulting entries of the ActiveScan which came from other drives on the system. These drives and associated old infections were part of another operating system, and have no bearing on the problem at hand.

Here's the results:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files/folders in bold (if found):

C:\Documents and Settings\MDT
C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfcii.ini

then do a new active scan and tell me if it finds anymore.
