Hello,

I am first-time user of this website and think it's a great place to begin seeking help on a problem I have recently faced with my laptop. Let me just preface this by saying that I am, by all accounts, a tech noob and any help you offer me is probably going to have to be explained in fairly basic terms. Sorry !

Anyway, I have an old Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP Professional and only recently got hit by the XP Security Center malware. The problem is bad enough that my laptop will not even boot up anymore. It turns on and I get the opening Toshiba screen, but nothing after that, not even the Windows logo. I have tried starting my computer under safe mode but all I get is a series of lines of white text after which nothing happens.

I understand that one of the ways to deal with a problem of this nature is to run a repair install using the Windows XP CD. However, I've had this laptop for 5 years now and don't even know where the CD is anymore :) None of my data has been backed up either and I'm afraid of losing it all.

How do you suggest I go about fixing this ? I took it to GeekSquad and they want to charge me 300 dollars for it which I don't think is worth it. I'd rather spend the money to buy a new computer. It's most important for me to retrieve my data though.

I apologise if this topic has already been posted before; I tried looking but could not find anything. Anyway, I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks !

Hello cereberus

Welcome to G2Go. :)
=====================
Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?
You can get that option basically the same as you did with the Safe Mode option but look a few spaces under Safe MOde and you will see it.

Let me know if that get's you into Windows.

Hi kahdah,

Thanks for your response. I've tried using the Last Known Good Configuration and that doesn't get me into Windows either. What's the next best option to try ?

Try this option first please just like getting to safe mode you want to hit the F8 key continuously until you see the same set of options but instead of safe mode choose Disable automatic restart on system failure.
Tell me what the error code is, the first set of numbers may be something similar to 0x0000007e etc..

So I tried using the Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure option and that gives me a blank screen, just the same as if I try booting up normally or using the Last Known Good Configuration. This does not look good :)

By the way, if it's of any help to you, I get the following lines of white text printed on to screen when I try to use Safe Mode:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys

It stops at that line and just gets stuck there. Any advice on what I should try next ? I appreciate your help very much :)

Yes I would like to see what is running on the system.
You will need a blank cd,a cd burner and another computer to do the following.
Ok this file is big Print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

Two programs to download

First

ISOBurner this will allow you to burn OTLPE.iso to a cd and make it bootable. Just install the program, from there on in it is fairly automatic. Instructions

Second

  • Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 292Mb in size so it may take some time to download.
  • When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Looking at your system now, one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor Trojan.

If this computer is ever used for on-line banking, I suggest you do the following immediately:

1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

2. From a clean computer, change ALL your on-line passwords for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, on-line companies, any on-line forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
=======================================
Please copy the contents below and save it to a usb stick then boot again with the cd and transfer the text file over to the infected computer to run the fix.

Run OTLPE
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :OTL

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • It will produce a log for you on reboot, please post that log in your next reply.
=============
Reboot like normal and let's see if that get's you into Windows.
If it doesn't then let me know and we will proceed a different way.

I ran the code as you asked me to do and have pasted the log file below. I can get into Windows now and most programs seem to be working normally :) What do you suggest is the next step in the process ?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello :)

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - that Kaspersky scan took absolute ages. Anyway, I've attached the logs of both the Malwarebytes and Kaspersky scans. Let me know what you think ! Thank you :)

Looks good now.
Do you still use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5?

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
