Hi,
The main symptom seems to be missing services on startup, one of which is networking so I have no internet access on the machine. I've tried to follow the instructions here for virus/malware removal, but can't get Malwarebytes to run. Its the famous "runtime error 373". I've tried the workaround http://forums.malwar...?showtopic=7377 with no success. Windows won't let me install SubInACL due to "administrator policy restrictions". I'm logged in as administrator and dial-a-fix shows no restrictive policies.

It still boots OK in safe mode, Stinger found nothing, chkdsk runs clean, as does memtest86. I have a second machine, so can download to USB key for the sick machine. So now I'm stuck...

I suspect an infection of some sort, hence the post in this forum, but will repost elsewhere if necessary. The OS is XP Home Edition.

Regards,
D.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, MBAM, SmitfraudFix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

If need be, download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and run them from the USB device.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ABCD.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

Double click on the ABCD.exe ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

**Note: If Combofix (ABCD) won't run from the desktop, try running it from the USB device.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. Vista and Windows 7 users skip this part

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Posted Image

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

    Posted Image

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply using Copy/Paste.

Notes:

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Also please describe how your computer behaves in your next reply.

Hi,
Thanks for helping. The combofix log is pasted below. In terms of behaviour, I was unable to access McAfee security centre to disable it, and drag'n'drop no longer functions, so I was unable to install the recovery console as directed. Is there another way to install it apart from using combofix? I can move or copy files in a command window, but not with Windows.

D.

Click Start -> Run and type cmd tap enter. Then, copy / paste or type the following followed by enter:
If you type it, note the spaces.

copy c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32

Once you have done this, restart your computer and your Windows should be back to normal. At this point, you need to immediately update McAfee. Let me know if this works.

No difference, unfortunately. I forgot some other symptoms.
1. When the windows login screen appears, there are 2 short beeps.
2. I always get an error box with "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" after logging in

Sorry - my mistake. I must have mistyped the first time, as svchost.exe wasn't there again when i rebooted. I repeated, verified that it was definitely copied correctly, and it appears to have started up cleanly :) I will update McAfee as instructed. Is there anything else I need to do?

Before this started, we noticed McAfee was complaining repeatedly that the firewall was turned off - its now doing that again.

Run a new Combofix (ABCD) scan and post the results.
BTW, McAfee is what caused the deletion of the legit windows svchost.exe file.

Hi,
I applied the fix from McAfee, updated, and everything now seems fine. Do you still want a final ComboFix report? Sorry to have bothered you with a non-malware issue. Disappointing that as a McAfee client I received no email notification of this problem.

Many thanks,
Drew

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

In your case we ran ABCD from the external device.
You can remove these leftover files and folders if listed:
e:\diagnostic\ABCD.exe
e:\diagnostic\ComboFix
e:\diagnostic\QooBox
e:\diagnostic\combofix.txt
e:\diagnostic\combofix-quarantine-files.txt

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :)

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
• From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
