trouble with hdmi connection to T.V.

hello all, ive got a hdmi cable so i can hook up my laptop to my 780 hd tv. the connection only works when i select projector only and will not work with duplicate screen option. This is usually fine, but i just discovered that when i tried to run X3: Terren Conflict the tv screen goes blank. it will play the sounds but wont show anything as long as the game is running. Is there any solution to this?
