Thank you for responding.

The linked instructions seemed to have cleared the error on my desktop. But as you indicated, I have other infections ... so below is the new hijackthis log.

BTW, in an earlier attempt to remove this trojan, I mistakenly installed Kaspersky even if I already had an existing Norton AV 2005. I successfully uninstalled Norton with Symantec's SymNRT.exe but am having a difficult time uninstalling Kaspersky. Also, a KAV script checker dialog keeps popping up saying it cannot load a JScript library from path C:\...\Symantec Shared\Script Blocking\scrauth.dll
Would you also be able to direct me to HELP on uninstalling Kaspersky?

Hi, LucianC. Please follow these instructions below and we'll have the HiJackThis and Kaspersky problems sorted!

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Save it to your desktop.

Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".

Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

After running CleanUp!, please reboot your PC and post a fresh HiJackThis log and we'll take the Kaspersky problem from there.

Disabling System Restore

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

• Turn off System Restore.
• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check Turn off System Restore.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot the PC then Re-Enable system restore following the instructions above and you will have a safe restore point to revert to in the future.

Kaspersky

There are two fixes for the Kaspersky problem, it will depend on what version you are running. I will post the fix for the most recent version (5 or above), if you have version 4, please let me know and i will post the fix for that. This fix involves editing the registry which can be hazardous. These are instructions to back up the registry but please only follow these steps if you know what you are doing!

Fixing Kaspersky

• Click Start -> Search -> All Files/Folders.
• Search for the file named jscript.dll. It normally resides in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ but this may be different for you. Make a note of where it is on your PC.
• Click Start -> Run then type regedit in the box that appears.
• In the Regedit that appears, click File then click Export. Export the registry to a folder you will remember.
• Once it has been exported (backed up), click the Edit menu then click Find.
• When the find box appears, type scrauth.dll and make sure Match Whole String Only is unticked. Click the Find Next button.
• It should find it at the location :HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb58}\InprocServer32
• Right-click on the (default) entry and click Modify from the menu.
• Type the location you found the jscript.dll file in the box that opens up. If it is in the \System32\ directory then just copy and paste the following into the box: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jscript.dll and then click OK.
• Go back to the [b[Edit[/b] menu then Find and click Find Next to see if there are any other files with that name. If you find any more just repeat the procedure above to rename the file location.
• Once there are no more entries of scrauth.dll, exit Regedit and reboot.

Once rebooted, please run through the Kapsersky uninstall procedure and let me know how you're getting on.

Hi Alex,

I have Kaspersky AV Personal version 4.5.

I went ahead and editted the registry. It somehow got rid of the scrauth.dll JScript dialog that kept popping up everytime I access the IE browser, Windows Search,etc.

However, I still was not able to uninstall Kaspersky 4.5 using Add/Remove programs.

Could you please let me know the uninstall procedure for version 4.5.
