Hi all,

I've searched for a while now but can't find a working answer:

Recently used AVG to delete infections on a friends computer and now I have the XP Loop.

The Notebook has no CD drive to use the XP disc to repair the OS so I need to just restore/recover to factory settings.
I've tried ctrl+F11 many times but nothing comes up, even though the user manual says it does support it.

Is my only option an external cd drive?

during boot do you see an option to press f12 for boot options? try that and see if there's a recovery mode

You can create a bootable flash drive with Windows XP on it.

I keep getting missing Hal.dll file error when I try to boot from USB.

Try this guide. It's for a EEE PC, but will produce the same results.

The error your getting is from bootsec not writing the correct boot sector. Make sure its the first bootable device and try to format and reinstall the boot sector again if your having an issue.

My apologies. Try this link instead, the tools are directly linked to that page no 3rd party file hosting sites involved.

EDIT: A quick side note...are you doing this on the netbook? If so, you will have to copy the CD to another machine, put the contents on a flash drive, then put them on the netbook.

Thanks diabillic. Can't seem to recognise my usb stick now Will keep at it.

Edit: I'm using a laptop to build the USB boot/XP files from the disc that came with the Netbook.

Nope, can't get PeToUSB to see my USB stick.

Try doing a quick format using the windows format tool then open up PetoUSB again.

During the process of booting from the USB twice after the copying(steps 6/7/8) it says my original windows will be overwritten and all previous data lost.
I am making this USB recover on another computer from the one I need to fix, will it overwrite my Windows?

It doesnt matter which machine you create it on, your not creating a sysprep image or anything like that so its not hardware dependent.

Please post a screenshot of what is telling you that. Is it telling you that when your installing Windows on the netbook?

Finally, have got a working XP on the Netbook now. However when I boot the machine there is a boot option of 2 Windows XP's. Any advice how to rid one of them?

You guys/gals have been great btw, i've got loads more questions lol

Which one do you pick to load XP? You can fix that by editing your boot.ini file. We just need to know which entry you select to load XP so the correct one can removed.
