DVD-RW drive gets converted into CD-ROM drive when i insert a dvd game

I recently bought a couple of game cd's which were in dvd format i inserted them into my dvd drive but when i do so the dvd drive gets converted into cd drive i took the dvd's to my friend's house and checked them but the dvd had contents in it then why isn't my pc playing them when i insert other games which i had bought earlier they work but why it does'nt work for these dvd's please someone help me........... :)

Are they genuine commercial DVD discs or have they been "ripped", transcoded and transferred to CD?
If not genuine, original DVD discs that could be the problem. And ripping commercial discs is illegal anyway (as is owning them).
