how can i shut off the dep .it is driving me crazy when i turn off my pc i have to sit here and hit end now for each program even if i already closed all programs . i just want to shut it off.it never used to say end program before i did a recovery and now it does

When you say recovery, do you mean recovery from a partition on the disc, recovery meaning restore point OR what please.
Do you have the XP CD to run some checks.
It could be an application that is running, but not closing within the alloted time frame.
Try F8 Safe Mode boot and se if Safe Mode shuts down OK

Please do not think I am being awkward, but if I have to leave the thread before it is solved it is then easier for someone to pick up where I have left.
AS IT WORKS OK in Safe Mode, which loads with a minimum set of processes and drivers we can presume, for the time being that, it is one of those and not a virus.
IM apps is Internet Messenger.
Which messenger are you using.
You do not by any chance have two anti-virus or two firewalls running - do you.

Create a new shortcut on your Desktop named "Shutdown (forced)", using the following command as the "Target":

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0 -f
