Not 100% certain there is a max but 2048x1536 sounds familiar :)

The connector itself has no limit, but the max res before it looks entirely too grainy to see is 2048x1536.

Most max out at 2560 x 1600 but, according to Newegg's specs the Sapphire 100256HDMI will do 3840 x 2400:
