Office 97 Installation Problem

My brother just got a new computer running XP and the only version of Microsoft Office we have here is '97. We tried to install it but it keeps telling us that it is an upgrade version of 97, not the full... which doesn't make sense because we were able to install it on two other computers running ME and 98, which didn't have earlier versions of office on them. Can anyone help me out with this problem?
