Problems started a few months ago, seemed to happen a lot when browsing wepages heavy on flash contain (lots of banners..), the computer would just freeze. I reinstalled mozilla and flash several times but it didn't seem to help.
Later the hdd gave out, I thought there goes the problem, installed an old 40gb drive, still had problems. Bought a new hdd, problems persisted, even on a clean install.

Right now it seems to happen randomly, if left long enough on desktop it will eventually freeze or reboot (freeze is a lot more common).
I've tryed cleaning it (it was pretty dusty..), but I don't think that's it, I had issues with the gpu getting too hot but since I added 2 extra fans everything runs a lot cooler (i was getting high cpu temps before removing the dust, nothing over 60-65º tho).

Power supply was changed along with the MB a few years back, so I think I'm ok on that side...

Checked the ram with memtest for over 8hours, no errors (it did not even freeze -_-)

Changed from avg to avira although nothing pointed to avg being the problem.

The c: drive is actually an external usb hdd, OS is in the H: drive.

I've ran avg and avira for viruses (turned out clean), malware bytes and spybot found some stuff that I deleted (no srrious infections according to the programs).

And last, i've uploaded a screen of the event log, usually before a freeze a lot of things happen and from what I've seen always the same stuff in the same order:

Untitled_1.jpg

terminal server starts
servicio de Compatibilidad de cambio rápido de usuario starts (compatibility to change users fast)
NLA (Network Location Awareness) starts
Servicio de descubrimientos SSDP starts
Servicio de puerta de enlace de capa de aplicación starts (Gateway to application layer?)
DKRtWrt sends a notice to get started but the freeze occurs before it ever does.

If this last part means anything to anyone please help! I'm out of ideas and this is getting so frustrating ><

Thanks in advance!

:)
Let's see if we can get a little more detail on this then what you have given so far. Please do the following and attach the requested logs so I can take a look at them.

  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 6 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions and program

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

I'm trying to answer just had a freeze fest (like 4 in a row..)

I can't use VEW, spanish is not supported, is there a way to change the language?

I alrdy installed autorun trying to fix the problems, removed all entries that mentiones "File not found" and I uploaded the txt.

The series of events I mentionned from the log are not errors btw, just 5 or 6 things that seems to always happen before a freeze, if you check the screen I posted before at 19:42:22 until 19:42:24 a lot of events happen right before the crashes, I can try to list them all and translate them all properly if that would help.

edit: just used Unplug n' Pray to disable UPNP as it's listed as a security threat and is among the services tha start right before the freezes.

ok Autoruns look pretty good.
Since the event viewer is not showing anything lets try a different way.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

Chkdsk /f does not do as deep of a check as chkdsk /r and will not repair everything like the latter will. Let me know how it is working when done but if issue still is happening then you need to run chkdsk /r

I did the chkdsk /f, still had freezes, so I did the chkdsk /r. Once it finished and the computer started it froze (on desktop), I rebooted manually and it started doing the chkdsk again.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

I installed the windows version and will run it now, I'm guessing the right way to do it is creating the bootable CD though.

I'll try that way as soon as I manage to get a CD (can only find dvd's) ><

edit: hdd is Seagate btw

Found a CD and I am now running SeaTools for DOS on the "Long Test". Should I make the accoustic test when it's done?

OK then we can assume the HD is in good working order so that variable is out of the picture.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

Posted Image

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

Posted Image

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

Posted Image

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

The sad part is I actually ran all these tests (including the hhd test rofl), I was just to lazy to run them on a bootable cd so I used the windows version on all of them.. ><

If the system somehow passes the memtest on both different rams separately (testing atm) should I try to test them together?

Nope we can assume the memory is good then. We would have to take a look at the PSU then and I am including those directions below so you can add that results also.

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
  • It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
  • Now go to Start and then to All Programs
  • Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
  • In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
  • Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
  • Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
  • Attach it to your next reply
