Hi-
I am not sure what happened to my PC yesterday. It was abnormally shutdown- by the power button so on restart it asks- start normally or safe mode. I have had this before so I just hit start normally. The computer boots and all looks fine but then I can't get ANY programs to run and can't get to task manager. I boot in safe mode and have been looking around in regedit. I see keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS that seem weird to me. A lot of the keys themselves have either a f! or a c! in front of them. Here is one of the keys full path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\COmponents\X86_microsoft-windows-taskmgr.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_en-us_d4a55056622813a6. One of the keys says f!taskmgr.exe.mui. I am working off a separate computer. Any thoughts on this? I can't copy and paste any settings or logs b/c I can't get connected with it.

- I can't get to system recovery through the PC. It says file not found although I know I create a backup just last month.

There is one piece of info that I left out of my original message. In standard mode when I hit CTL/ALT/DEL, screen goes black for a few minutes then message- Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog- Failure Security Options, Click OK. My only option is to hard shut down.

- Because I searched this error out I came to the same possible conclusion- CHKDSK. I am running it now.

- Those keys still seem wierd to me. I have been in and out of the registry off and on and never seen ones like it. Can anyone verify on their machine XP Home Premium Edition that they have f! or c! keys in registry?

Thanks for any input received..

Please go to Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide...
HERE....

That will help you clean up 80 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty (and you may not be) follow the instructions and start a new topic
here
post the OTListIt2 and Rooter logs ...
The "Topic Title" should contain the name of the infection that you are having a problem with...Use the "Topic Description" to include more details. This will help you get faster responses as some people are more familiar with certain infections....

if you are unable to download or run ANY of the tools...try downloading them on another computer and put them on a flash drive or cd and try installing them that way..
no joy...
start a new topic and let them know you can't run any of the tools..

if your still having issues after the malware pros give you a all clean...

go here to kellys korner and work thru his Task Manager - Control/Alt/Delete - Doesn't work troubleshooter

Hi-
Thanks for the reply. I meant to say system restore... grumpster. BTW Love Grumpy- my motto also. :)

I was out of town for 3 days. I got this corrected b4 I left. Here is what I did and it seems kinda stupid now. From Safe Mode- C: Properties/Tools, Ran chkdsk: Auto fix errors. Safe Mode- ran chkdsk /r from command prompt a couple of times. Removed Adaware program and AVG. Installed Avast and Spybot ran both. Cleaned up some of my files. Created a new system restore point.

I am still concerned about my f! and c! in registry but I am letting it lie for now.

Thanks for the help...
