problems with mcafee virusscan 7

I recently reloaded mcafee virusscan onto my computer after not using it for a while and after updating 3 years worth of virus signatures on 56k I got a "virusscan synchronization service has encountered a problem and needs to close message. And now i'm getting the same message for "instant updater main program" i've tried downloading the application updates first then the dat files (which i've tried to download 3 times) but still no joy
ANY HELP ON THIS WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED !!!!
