Adding dual monitor to Dell optiplex gx620

Ok well I just upgraded from my integrated video card to a 9500gt and am trying to set up dual monitors. I have one ViewSonic CRT and HP LCD and the nvidia control panel recognizes both but i cant get them to both turn on at the same time. even when i test extending the window across both or setting both up independently. They are both VGA so i had to use an adapter for one and don't know if that could be the problem. Is it possible for the adapter to make the monitor recognized but still unusable?
I have Windows XP professional and if any more info is needed just let me know
