Hey guys – so I have a huge issue, not too sure what virus I’ve run into. I’ll start from the beginning.

Yesterday as I was closing down my computer I noticed a Java icon on my taskbar, and I wasn’t running any java apps that I know of. I closed it down, and firefox froze on me. I finally decided to CTL+ALT+DEL firefox but I think the damage was done. I immediately ran a malwarebytes scan and it found 5 things, all Trojan/virus related (from what I remember they were avsoft/avsuite related because I remember thinking that they looked like Avast). I deleted them and rebooted. Upon reboot, my computer took forever from the login in screen to get to the desktop/icons. I read some info on running “explorer.exe” but it was already running. I shut it down and tried to run “explorer.exe” in the RUN option in the task manager. When it came up, the desktop and icons appeared, however they looked like an old OS. I have Windows XP, but it looked like windows 98 or something (gray task bar and task manager, hopefully that makes sense).

I have malwarebytes, avast, mcafee, so I ran scans with those and they didn’t find anything. I could not connect to the internet, so I started up in safe mode and tried a scan then. Came up with nothing. Finally, I did a system restore to yesterday before I got infected and when I restarted it took forever to load again BUT it was back to the XP look (blue task bar/manager) thankfully. I was able to connect to firefox BUT when I go to antivirus sites I get redirected to bad sites according to WOT (I thought having WOT, and a bunch of spyware/antivirus software would save me from this, guess not).

I’ve run full scans on malwarebytes and avast, along with using my PC to download spybot to a USB stick to transfer over to my laptop and install. Spybot found some spyware but nothing major. I am still getting re-directed (to random BAD sites) when trying to go to anti-virus sites and I don’t want to restart in case 1. it reverts back to the 98 view or 2. takes forever to load my desktop icons (just a blank view of the desktop photo). In addition I ran malwarebytes again (full scan), and it comes up clean (up to date version of the program of today also).

So, I previously had a virus (6-12 months ago) and got amazing help through these forums using combofix. I also took every measure possible not to get one again with WOT, and these spyware/malware/antivirus programs. I dunno how I got another one! But my dumbass did, [bleep]!! Anyways, I have downloaded combofix again and I am ready to use it if necessary. Sorry to ramble on, just hoping to give the best picture of the situation. I THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR THE HELP IN ADVANCE! YOU GUYS ROCK!

Thanks!

Hello gridiron and welcome to GeeksToGo :)
I'm hammerman and I'm going to help you fix your problem.

Before we begin, here are some guidelines which will help us both in fixing your problem.
  • Malware removal is not instantaneous and will take a number of steps to complete. Please continue to carry out the steps requested until I let you know that your computer appears clean.
  • Please do no attach logs or post them in Quote/Code boxes unless requested.
  • I suggest you print or save any instructions I give you for easy reference. We may be using Safe mode and you will not always be able to access this thread. You can copy and paste these instructions into Notepad and then save the text file to your Desktop. If you need any help with this or further clarification, please let me know.
  • When posting logs, please ensure Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad. Open Notepad, select Format on the menu bar and make sure that Word Wrap is unchecked.
  • Please follow the steps exactly in the same order posted. If you can't perform a certain step, or you're unsure on what to do, please stop and let me know.
  • If in doubt about anything, please ask.
You should not run Combofix unless asked to. It's a powerful tool and if used incorrectly can lead to damage to your system.

Please follow these steps.

-- Step 1 --
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
-- Step 2 --

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    Posted Image
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

Hammerman, thank you so much! You are the man! I have posted the OTL and Extras logs below. When running GMER it completed the scan but when I tried to save it froze on me. I will try to save the log and post below if it works. I will let you know tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks.

As a heads up, upon trying the first GMER scan, the computer is going extremely slow and the MY Computer Icon has disappeared. GMER will not close and everything is taking 5-10 minutes to respond (if not longer).

Unfortunately the computer froze up and the only option was to reboot. Upon doing so, the desktop/icons failed to show (took 5-10 minutes to load) and it reverted back to the "Gray" 98 task manager/bar. Computer is going extremely SLOW now.

Hi,

Delete your copy of Combofix and then..

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

Thanks. I'll try the combofix route. GMER continued to freeze and take up 100% performance. I'm hoping I'll be able to disable the antivirus software and run combofix. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!!!

hammerman - thanks again for the help. I've posted the combofix log below. It did reboot the computer twice (once with an message saying a rootkit had been detected) - I'm sure this is normal for infected computers, just thought I'd include it...

Thanks!

Hi,

Please follow these steps and then give me an update on how your computers running.

-- Step 1 --

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent malware removal tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
-- Step 2 --

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

-- Step 3 --

Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Select the Update tab and then click Check for Updates. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Select the Scanner tab, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

I also deactivated TeaTimer (as you said) but found it was running again about 30 mins later through my task manager. It stated this info under the 'Resident' area:

"9:22:05 AM Denied (based on user decision) value "SpybotSD TeaTimer" (newdata: "") deleted in System Startup user entry!
"9:22:05 AM Denied (based on user decision) value "ctfmon.exe" (newdata: "") deleted in System Startup user entry!

When i went back in previously, the TeaTimer box was still checked even though I unchecked it previously. Now when i go back in, it is unchecked.

Dunno if it means anything but I thought I'd pass it along. Thanks.

Hi,

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is not necessary and will not give added protection. In fact, you may be more vulnerable to infection due to conflict between the programs and the extra resources required will inevitably slow down your computer. We recommend you use one antivirus program and regularly update it's virus definitions.

You currently have McAfee and Avast installed. Please uninstall one of them.

You also have traces of Norton antivirus on your system. Please use the Norton removal tool here, selecting the correct version, to completely remove Norton from your computer.

Then...

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You may be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Settings
  • In the scan settings, select the following:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
Scan spyware, adware, diallers and other riskware
    Scan Archives
    Scan E-mail databases
  • Click Save
  • Now under ScanSelect My Computer
  • This will start the scanning of your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on View Report and then Save Report
  • Save the file to your desktop as a text file.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

hammerman - I kept Avast (deleted McAfee and Norton components), but I believe I will need a firewall service (Comodo maybe?) moving forward. Please advise. Here is the Kaspersky report. Thanks :)
