My uncle just gave me a router to go along with my new laptop. We use Suddenlink cable internet. The router worked quite well with the modem, my new laptop, and the desktop until my uncle suggested encrypting the router on my laptop. He changed the passkey and set it to "TKIP". I lost the connection immediately after. I tried using the new password he wrote down but it did not work. I also tried setting it back to AES and changing the passkey. It failed. The desktop still has internet connection, but the laptop does not. I want the default settings so I can use my laptop again but I'm not sure what to do. I used the reset button on the router as well as System Restore and a reboot and nothing helped. I appreciate any help you are willing to give me.

EDIT: Now access to my desktop is limited, so I had to unplug the router and hook the ethernet cord back up to the modem itself. This is after trying to rename my passkey once again and unplugging everything and hooking it back up. Am I missing something?

There are usually 2 ways to reset a router.
The 1st is with the reset button, but you need to hold it for longer than 5 secs.
The 2nd is through the web based utility.

Hello 123Runner.

I would like to thank you for your help. It appears to have worked. I guess I wasn't holding the reset button in long enough. After doing that and reusing the setup disk it came with, it most certainly worked!

I'm embarrassed such difficulty came from something so simple. I thank you very much and I appreciate your help. Again, thank you.

Please perform a reset to factory defaults:

Locate the reset hole on the back of the router - it is recessed in a small hole.
Using a paperclip or pin, push the button in for 25 seconds.
Let go, and give the router a moment to boot.
Once it is up, the network's name will be Linksys, and you can login to the router by connecting to it with a network cable, launching a browser and going to http://192.168.1.1for more support  http://www.linksyswirelesshelp.com/
You can login with an empty user, and the password: admin
