Hey everyone. I'm currently running Windows 7 Professional. My computer has 8 gigs of ddr2 ram. Anyways, svchost.exe recently has been eating my memory. I thought I was infected due to a huge spike, but after help from SweetTech, I'm not infected and it is probably an error somewhere. svchost.exe has roughly 6+ copies running at all times and the top one is having a 160k average. Thanks in advance, all help is appreciated.

Here are my current processes:

svchost.exe has roughly 6+ copies running at all times

It's normal.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Broni- I'm familiar with having quite a few, but not used to seeing an average of 10ish in the task manager. Here's the log for you:

At this very moment, I have 12 of them running.

System Idle Process (CPU NOT used) is listed at 93.75% - perfect!

Are you having any particular issues?

no issues particularly. My computer is a little "laggier" than it has been before. svchost has never taken his much memory in general though. (At the moment it's 158k, 69k, 30k, etc..) as you have seen in the log. Is there any way to reduce it or free up some of the many processes I have? I had roughly 70, but now it's down to 56.

I quite don't understand what you worry about some "k" of RAM, if you have 8 giga of it.
At this moment, I have 68 processes running and I'm not worrying.
See, if you don't have too many startups. Those create processes.

To get rid of svchost.exe high CPU usage problem is to open the Task Manager, find the process that is causing the problem, right-click on it, go to Set Priority and set it to Below Normal (or Idle if Below Normal doesn’t help). Keep in mind that setting it to Idle might interfere with your networking services, especially if you’re at work and part of a large network.

Thank you for your help, I forgot about that ability. I'm at home with a small network, so I'll give it a shot and see what happens =P

Broni: Honestly, you're right, I do have a lot of ram, but nevertheless I still care what uses it =P Thank you for you help as well though, much appreciated.

You have to remember, that Windows 7 (same with Vista) treats RAM in very different way, than all previous Windows versions.
In simple terms, it'll take all it can and it'll cache it for immediate use. There is practically no "free" RAM left, like in XP, for instance.
Read more here: http://www.codinghor...-my-memory.html
It's about Vista, but very same applies to Win 7
