I have been using a Dell Dimension 4600 computer with a Compaq Presario MV500 monitor without event for a year. For no reason I can fathom, the resolution of the monitor suddenly stuck at the lowest level (640 x 480) and I can't budge the setting. When I go into the System file on WIN XP Home and check video hardware, there is no listing for a driver. I'm puzzled.

Can I download the appropriate Compaq video driver into my Dell unit without worrying about compatibility issues? Or should I look for a Dell video driver?

I recall reading months ago somewhere on the web that imcompatibility of drivers, in some circumstances, can render a computer useless and call for reinstallation of all files. My partitions are all stored on an external hard drive and have been recently updated, but I don't want to risk incompatibility issues unless necessary.
