im in a dilema and dont know what to do.. please be patient as i try to explain what has happened

im running a desktop with xp home and sp2.. its been running very well for a yr now and this is what i did last week and its consequences.. i removed comodo a/v as it was not updating and and installed a free version of avg.my main hard drive© is 120 gig and i have a slave hard drive(e) of 160gig.. everything i want to keep i place on my drive (e)this is mostly word documents, excel documents and music and photo's.. after i installed the free avg i did a full scan it found no threats so i thought all was well. anyway i shut the computer down while i had to nip out and when i came back in started the pc again and everything looked as normal. when i opened (e) drive i noticed most of the files and or folders were missing and when i was looking at the content they were just disappearing before my eyes...wow..,i did a scan on this drive for errors and none were found,i then did a system restore to the previous day and some of the folders were back but although the folders and there names were still there the folders are now empty.
i then noticed that the © drive which was previously using about 40gig was now down to only using 8gig and was running very slow (especially the internet)..
i disconnected the (e) drive from the tower and i have formatted and reinstalled xp on drive ©.

after drive© was up and running again i reconnected drive(e)and its still the same the folders are still there but are empty... any advice would be grateful as i have approx 5 yrs of photo's and countless important documents on this drive.

thanks in advance
