Laptop Power problem

Just upgraded my Sony from Vista to Win7 Ultimate. Each time I use the laptop from the battery it just switches off completely once I click on anything. Battery is fully charged but that makes no difference doesn't matter what I try to open. It wont power up again unless the power cable is plugged in and then it runs ok from the mains. Can anyone suggest what might be causing the problem, all the power options are set correctly.
