In windows xp how do I reset so that a certain type of files open with different programs?

If you mean files like: Image (Jpeg...), Audio (MP3...) or Video (MPeG...) ect.

For those type of files you have to right click on one of them and choose open with you can either choose one of the options offered to you or choose your own program out of the list offered or you can browse for your own program.

If you want this type of files to almays be open with a certain program other then the present default one, just check the box in the choose program option that says something like Always use this program to open this type of file
