running video while gaming?

Hello forum, i have a bit of a problem. I set up my laptop to run a second monitor as an extension and lately I like to watch video while playing games. My computer can handle it, when i run video on the internet (youtube or Hulu) this works fine, but when i try to run a video in VLC player AVS or windows media all that i get is sound and no video. Does anyone know how to get one of those players to work while running a game at the same time or is there another video player that can do it.
