Screen whites out

After what appears to be a random amount of time, the screen of my laptop starts flickering and within a period of 30 seconds or so it goes white. The problem tends to occur when I'm on the internet - sometimes it happens when I have just started up and other times I can go for hours with no problem. Does anyone know what's wrong?
