I am looking to get a P4 processor, at least 2.0. A better, faster processor kind of depends on price.

Here's an example of my confusion (from Pricewatch): These prices are all fairly close, but there are so many types. Is there really much difference between the different speeds? Do I want 533Mhz, 800 or 'Prescott'? etc...

$148 - Pentium 4 2.8GHz Prescott
$143 - Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800MHz
$153 - Pentium 4 2.8GHz 533MHz
$155 - Pentium 4 2.6GHz 800MHz
$138 - Pentium 4 2.6GHz 533MHz
$185 - Pentium 4 2.6GHz 400MHz
$99 - Pentium 4 2.4GHz Prescott
$143 - Pentium 4 2.4GHz 800MHz
$116 - Pentium 4 2.4GHz 533MHz
$149 - Pentium 4 2.4GHz 400MHz
$110 - Pentium 4 2.26GHz 533MHz
$110 - Pentium 4 2.26GHz

Even more difficult is finding out what motherboard to buy. There are so many brands, so many models... I am confused about all the specs, i need help with some of the basics, as well as the more advanced extras from model to model.

Does anyone know of a good resource for educating myself? I am completely overwhelmed...

Thanks!

The Mhz after the CPUs Ghz is the CPUs front side bus speed. The more bus the better performance. Dont buy from Pricewatch go2 tigerdirect.com, you can get great mobo and CPU bundle. If you are going for gaming and video dont buy Intel.......buy AMD, they kick butt

This is for gaming, yes, but also for music production (Cubase, Reason, Live, etc..). Thanks for the info, I understand that higher #s for the bus is better, I just didn't realize that's what the numbers were, :tazz:.

I still could use some help on motherboard information? Especially if i have to do look into AMD as well as Intel. Should i assume that an AMD board is the best choice for an AMD processor? I am definately going to look into a Mboard/Processor combo package...Tigerdirect is cheap?

Thanks for your help!
