Transfer software between HDs

I just purchased a new Dell desk top. I got it because my former Dell (3 years old) had its hard drive break (I could not start the old PC). I have the old drive. It has data on it I need. How do I connect the old drive to my new PC so I can transfer needed data, including my e-mails, from the old drive to the new one.
