Started getting popups like crazy, couldn't close them fast enough. The name Aurora kept popping up. Ran Ad-Aware several cycles in a row and just kept finding bugs, the same ones over and over.

Found you guys, ran all the recommended steps:

Cleanup
Adaware
CWShredder
Spybot
Ewido
Trend Housecall.

Couldn't figure out TDS-3 and am getting a DLL error message when I boot up. Aurora specific msgs seem to have disappeared, but still popups and I can't get anything like a clean AdAware run. I have the Windows Updates and here is my HighjackThis log:

Hello aleonevoeh and welcome to GeeksToGo. :tazz:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\System32\Userinit.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VBouncer] C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\VirtualBouncer.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINNT\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINNT\VCMnet11.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [exp.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\exp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr52] RunDLL32.EXE ,DllRun

O16 - DPF: {EC51659D-721F-4CBF-9CEA-5E776D89CEA9} - http://www.pacimedia...ll/pcs_0002.exe

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [o79Q35W] sclmodem.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Zwq4RRa3i] sccenum.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Windows AFA Internet Enhancement

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\VBouncer << Whole Folder

C:\WINNT\VCMnet11.exe << File Only
C:\WINNT\system32\exp.exe << File Only

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

sclmodem.exe << Remove only if fixed above.
sccenum.exe << Remove only if fixed above.

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
I know that you have run scans with Ad-Aware but there is a new version that was just released and I would like you to download, install, set it up according to the following instructions, and run another scan.

Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:
  • Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, allow it to remove the previous version during install. Some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days
    • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :
      • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
        • Scan Within Archives
      • Under Select drives & folders to scan -
        • choose all hard drives
      • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan active processes
      • Scan registry
      • Deep-scan registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URLs
      • Scan my Hosts file
    • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
      • Under Shell Integration:
        • Move deleted files to recycle bin
      • Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
        • include addtional object information
        • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
        • include environment information
      • Under Alternate Data Streams:
        • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
        • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
    • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
      • Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
        • Unload recognized processes during scanning
        • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
      • Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
        • Always try to unload modules before deletion
        • During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
        • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
      • Under the Log Files:
        • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
    • Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
    • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window.
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’.
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step 6
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

I think we're doing okay (?!). Too soon to tell maybe. I didn't find all the elements you'd told me to check so maybe I got rid of them in my continued fiddling and prior to getting your response.

But it seems like it's all good! Thanks a LOT! The Hijackthis log is below.

Your new fan,

Allison

You have a few new items in the log.

Step 1
Download this tool : LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PS1] C:\WINNT\system32\ps1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTask driver] C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svcproc.exe (file missing)

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

C:\WINNT\system32\ps1.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Thanks for the follow-through. I've done the steps you recommended; only once again, a couple of the files have disappeared on us. In "Step 4, delete the following files/folders", I was unable to find either of them:

C:\WINNT\system32\ps1.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe

I looked within C:\WINNT\system 32\ and I did a broad-based search to find them as well (hidden files included) and came up empty.

So, what's that mean? Did HiJackThis delete them?

Looks like one item remaining. :tazz:

Disable the offending Service
  • Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to System Startup Service and right click on it.
  • Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Delete the offending Service
  • Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
  • In the Delete window, type SvcProc and press OK.
  • OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Your new log appears clean. :tazz:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
