Why wont my new computer download updates for steam and what can i do

I've recently had a new computer and have downloaded and installed steam on it. But when it came to updating Steam, it keeps saying that im not connected to the internet or gets stuck at a random percentage. I've also had a problem downloading updates for my other games, I cant download updates from the actual game menu but I can download the updates from an online website. Can someone explain to me why my computer cant download th updates adn how to get it to download the updates please.
