Windows XP service pack 3 HP Desktop 4G ram, 160 GB HD.
IE8 and FireFox.

Windows Update Error - 0x80072EFF
All Browsers redirect to other url's and sites.
Only to access microsoft.com by hand-typing URL.
Browsers won't let me through to ms.com.

Printed and started with the Malware Removal Guide -
ran TFC, ERUNT, MalwareBytes.

I have Norton Security Suite, MS Security Essentials and
Windows Security Center (firewall= ON, Auto Updates = ON
and Virus Protection = ON) Should all these be turned off
prior to running the GMER? Per your Live Chat, I was told
not to turn off unless asked.

Running GMER now, but it is taking forever, and it won't move
beyond ?SYMEFA.SYS

** GMER > I have run this twice as first Run caused my
computer to turnoff. I then started computer in Safe Mode,
ran GMER again - shut system down.
