movie maker alternative

Hi everyone,
I am a school teacher and I have just introduced pupils to windows movie maker version 2.2 on xp. I have found when using photos to make into a film it regularly freezes. Also unable to use mov files from the kodak zi6 cameras.

Two questions - can i easily convert mov files so wmm will use them
2. is there an alternative out there suitable for children aged 7 to 11?
