Appropriate forum? If not, I'll move.

Upgraded an MSI VR420 laptop from Vista to Win 7 - no sound

Went: Control Panel-> Manage Audio Devices (from 'Sound' section) device there was:
High Definition Audio Device - Provider Microsoft ... tried to Update Driver - searched but win determined device was up to date.

Checked msi.com ... they had a RealTec driver to download but only up to Vista ... tried anyway but install failed.

Does this mean that I'm out of luck for sound from this laptop for WWin7?

I'm afraid so. You should always check your computer manufacturer's website for compatible drivers before upgrading it to a newer version of Windows. That's even more important with a laptop since you cannot simply fit a new sound-card that's got a Windows 7 driver, like you can with a tower PC.

You could also have run the "Upgrade Advisor" from Microsoft before upgrading, which would have highlighted any possible hardware/driver problems.

Would you mind sharing what the resolution was? It may help someone later with the same issue. Glad to hear everything is resolved.

I'm confused as you said

got the answer, so this issue 'resolved'

I know this may sound small but did you check the volume control on the side of the laptop to make sure it was turned up?
How about the master control for the audio?

  • (for Windows XP users)
  • Please click Start and click Run
(for Windows Vista and 7 users)
  • Please click Start and select the white text box.
  • Type: devmgmt.msc and hit Enter
  • Look for any entries with a Yellow Exclamation Mark or Red X's

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Attached is devmgr screen shot[attachment=42882:DevMgr1.PNG]. (Win7 search did not find devmgmt.exe, so went to control panel->Hardware->device mgr.)

I see that under 'Other Devices' there are 2 entries (both labeled 'Base System Device') - each with a yellow exclamation mark. I selected one and chose properties.

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

Not sure if we're on the same page here.

The MSI VR420 laptop has been upgraded from Vista to Win7 via a custom install - first doing a CLEAN ALL in DISKPART ... so nothing from Vista remains on disk.

Not sure what

is talking about.
Nothing is asking for XP CD !

The instructions are written with both XP and Vista included. The Win 7 will be the same as Vista.
If you ran the program and it did get the following message then there was nothing found.

In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

OK if it went that fast then it most likely did not have any issues with the OS.
I have searched the MSI site and can only find the Vista drivers for your sound.
It is located HERE
Is this the driver you downloaded and installed?
The Vista driver is a newer version after I compared the version numbers. If it is the same one you will have to contact them to see about a Win7 driver.
