AVI file and PC won't let me watch films

I downloaded a film in a avi format(Thats what it said when I downloaded it) But when I go to play the film Windows media player comes up and and it won't play, the same thing happend with a different movie I downloaded, so I thought I would download quicktime player, and the same thing happend it wont let me watch them.
