Laptop cannot go to sleep

Just recently I have discovered that my laptop does not go to sleep when I want it to. Instead the screen goes black but everything else stays on. I cannot recover it unless I shut it down by holding the power button. Any ideas what this is happening?

I am running Windows 7 64 bit
