Is it necessary to close open browsers when performing an on demand scan?If so why?

No. The whole point of an on-demand scan is it scans when the need is there regardless of what's open, otherwise it wouldn't be an on-demand scan, it would be a conditional scan, in this case "I'm not scanning that until you close this".
