I had to replace my internal DVD RAM drive about 2 weeks ago. I am having problems with the new drive unit which is a Matshita UJ880AS. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite Pro that is 14 months old.

The first problem was that, after turning the notebook on, occasionally it didn't boot the DVD RAM drive, and I had to uninstall and reinstall. After 3 or 4 such problems, it seemed to settle down.

Next problem is that I am trying to burn CDs and/or DVDs to back up my photos etc. I keep getting the error message "illegal disk".

So far, I have ruined 5 disks, tried the Miscosoft Fix It site, plus about 10 or so other sites that offer "free" upgrades for dvd drivers (all of these end up wanting money before anything gets "fixed" and I am not going to hand over cash in case it doesn't work).

I am using Nero 8 to burn the disks with.

Hoping this is just a resolvable software or driver glitch

Have you been here?: http://support.micro..._drive_problems

It may be Nero 8 is the problem, as it's a new drive and Nero 8 is now quite old.
However, I don't recommend you upgrade to nero 9 because it's too bloated and
you probably end up paying for features you don't need.

There are much better (and not bloated) free alternatives youcan try:

CDBurnerXP (Xp, Vista & Win7 compatible): http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

BurnAware Free: http://burnaware.com...aware_free.html

Burn4Free: http://www.burn4free...py-software.htm

So you can at least try them to see if Nero is the problem, without it costing you anything.

Hi

Have tried that microsoft link and it says it can't fix the problem. Also have tried Burner Xp and it doesn't work either. Will try the others and give that microsoft site another try also

Fingers crossed, already lost 5 disks to date....

PS Just been back to the microsoft site and got the response "Drive is not capable of burning"

It also claim I don't have burning software installed, when I have 2 burning programs installed...Nero 8 and Burner XP
