I have a Dell E510 with XP Media Center

I recently added a 2nd monitor and downloaded a new video driver.

Now it seems to freeze. Display locks up. No mouse or keyboard control. It happens randomly.

I've tried deactivating the 2nd display and putting XP into performance mode, by turning off all the facy graphics, but it still freezes.

Can anyone help me?

rolling back the video driver to 2006 seemed to do the trick. I'm wondering if anyone else has an ATI Raedon X600 Hypermemory video card with similar problems. I just don't get why the new (2009/2010) driver introduced this problem.

Sometimes a driver update doesn't work for the particular motherboard. I recently upgraded my ATI graphics card and used the latest driver from the install CD that came with the card and my system didn't like it. I didn't know what was wrong so I uninstalled the video card and driver and reinstalled my old one. I almost returned the new ATI card to Micro Computer but after researching the issue on the Net, I tried the prior version driver for this particular ATI card and it works great now on my system. So, sometimes you have to experiment with various driver versions to find the best one for your system.

Maybe so, but unfortunately I just had a freeze again after a week of it working fine. I am using the 2nd video display port, so I guess I could try turning that off to see what happens, but then I'm loosing capability. I guess this forum doesn't get monitored like the malware ones do. I'll try posting there. Thanks for your guidance.

Unless you are posting in the malware forum for a malware problem they will not assist you with a tech support issue and they will send you back here.

I recently added a 2nd monitor and downloaded a new video driver

As much as we would like to say the newest driver will work it just in reality does not. Sometimes the newest drivers will be a beta release release and not all bugs have been worked out. If the older driver works then you may have to do without some capabilities for awhile.
Another suggestion is to boot into Safe Mode and completely uninstall the video driver. If the manufacturer has a driver uninstall program that will help also to make sure all remnants of the driver are gone.
Then reboot back into normal mode and have the newest driver installed then. It could be a faulty installation that could be causing your issue.
Please be patient as we are all volunteers and real life does come first. We may not be able tog et back to you as fast as you like but our volunteers are trying as best as they can.

thanks, i appreciate your prompt and helpful response. I'll try your suggestions. I just wanted to make sure that someone was reading this forum. I presume that is the case and I should just be more patient.

Thanks again.

We all understand the stress of having a non working system and some like me have several systems in our homes that we have to keep running. I have 5 right now and with jobs and family we do not always answer back as quick as possible but we won't forget you.
If i can I would like to add some steps just to see if we can see anything else causing the problem.
  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 6 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
  • It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
  • Now go to Start and then to All Programs
  • Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
  • In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
  • Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
  • Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
  • Attach it to your next reply

XP freezes completely random and doesn't matter what I'm doing at the time. I've tried system restores and everything,It could be freezing up because your hard drive is too full. Most experts say to never use over 20% of your disk space on your main drive. I get uneasy when mine gets below 90% free space.

FWIW,

I am currently using a rolled back video driver and only one of the two displays and it still freezes.

The most recent time the display was blank because the computer had been sitting idle. I moved the mouse, the screen came back to life, the moused moved, I used the mouse wheel scroll for a second then it froze.

Thanks for all the help you can provide.

rshaffer61,

I thought that Chkdsk /r had fixed it, because its been working fine for the last couple of weeks.

But within the last few days its frozen twice.

first, i believe i had left the computer in standby, but when I came home the hard disk was spinning and the monitors had the faint glow of being in energy saver mode.

then today it froze while downloading music from itunes.

should I try Chkdsk /r again?

Yes but before doing that please do the following from post 6.

Run a new Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso and post the log please. I would like to see what it shows as the culprit.

Bonjour seems to behaving a lot of problem. Can you disable it or uninstall and see if that helps,
Your nic card is also having a driver issue. This may be the reason for IE not working.
I wold say first disable or uninstall Bonjour.
Also please do the following and let me know how everything is working then.

  • (for Windows XP users)
  • Please click Start and click Run
(for Windows Vista and 7 users)
