Few weeks ago hooked up an ipod to my laptop & it shut off.
After that I had many problems with it booting. It would either boot up and then the screen would go black before it fully started but can clearly hear it completely starting or just completely black screen.
thnx in advance for your help.

You may have some serious issue there, but let's check one more thing...
Let it cool down for 30 minutes, try to restart it in safe mode and see for how long (if) it'll stay up.

I able to get through long enough to do the system restore and it seems to be working fine.

Great news :)
I'd suggest buying a can of compressed air and cleaning well all laptop's vents.
