Sorry about my Malware post. I am an expert. I actually make a living fixing computers for people. I encounter the odd problem I've never seen before (always learning which is a great thing with computers) and then that's when I use these forums.
bob21197, do you have a C: drive? Are all your files including your operating system saved in your F: drive? Are you using partitions? It's unusual to see someone’s hard drive on F:.

Oddysee - yes I have a partitioned drive. My operating system is on F and my document storage is on c - just the way it worked out.
Broni - repair installation was not successful. The last reboot resulted in a black screen with the Windows XP logo in the middle and a "Please Wait" under the logo. It remained that way for more than an hour with no visible activity. At that point, I restored to a previous operating system image in order to get back in operation. Is the black screen normal and did I take action too soon?

Well, it looks like you're a smart person, who keep backups/images.
I hope, you didn't lose too much data.

Didn't lose anything serious. That is one reason that I keep my document files on a different partition from the operation system. I am still experiencing the problem with bad images after the restoration. Any idea why the Windows repair failed? What should I do next?

Unfortunately, Windows repair installation will not always work.
As a matter of fact, in many cases, clean Windows installation may be your only option.

I was afraid of that. Any general guidance regarding a clean install?

Glad you enjoyed that. Any idea what the real source of this problem is?

Not really. Gremlins exist and sometimes, Windows gets corrupted beyond repair.
Hopefully, there are no any hardware issues.

I build the machine in Feb from all new components. That does not rule out hardware issues, but it seems less likely. Will advise when clean install is completed(tomorrow or Monday).
