checkdsk is telling me that one of my disks needs checking for consistency. it starts to check and completes the check on files,but part way through check of indexes it stops and tells me that an unspecified error has occured and screen goes blank and computer continues to boot up.
the computer is a amd turion 64bit and is about four years old. i have about 15gb on the discs and about 65 gb free space

Lets check the drive itself for a problem first.
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.
