Hi there, I moved this from OS forum... I am running W-ME... recently upgraded to DSL and probably shot myself in the foot by upgrading to a newer version of AIM... since that is when my problems started. I am noticing a lot of "new" programs running on my system (itifil, etc)... I've run clean up, SpyBot, Ad-Ware-SE and loaded Hijack this and Lspfix in preparation of posting this...

Thank you in advance, this is my Hijack this log:

I forgot to mention that when I ran the on-line virus scan that you guys recommend, it found 8 infected instances with a trojan virus, but could neither delete nor clean the infected files...

TIA,

Thank you so much for your time. FWIW, I have done the above... also, I went ahead and loaded Firefox on and ZoneAlarm. That has cut down most of the problems, but I'm still stuck with "something". Also, I'm running windowsME and can not for the life of me figure out how to 1) get into 'safe mode' and 2) set Firefox as my default browser.

Thanks again,
dh

Hi Desperate,

There are two ways to get into Safe Mode:.

Method One
Reboot your computer and let Windows start the boot process.
When you see a line saying "Starting Windows 95 (or 98 or Me)" press your F8 key.
The Windows 95/98*admin Startup Menu will appear.
Choose option # 3 (Safe Mode) by pressing the 3 on your keyboard or selecting it with your arrow keys.
Press the Enter key to begin booting into Safe Mode. Note, it will take a few moments longer than a regular boot.
You are in Safe Mode when Windows displays Safe Mode in all four corners of the desktop and a Safe Mode message appears.

Method Two
Put a blank floppy disk into your A:\ drive.
Reboot your computer and let Windows start the boot process.
A message will be displayed: "Non-system disk, remove or replace disk and press any key to continue."
Remove the floppy from the A:\ drive and press the F8 key twice quickly.
You are in Safe Mode when Windows displays Safe Mode in all four corners of the desktop and a Safe Mode message appears..

To set Firefox as default browser

in Firefox go to "Tools -> Options -> General -> Set Firefox As Default Browser"

Now lets see if we can sort out your problems.

Please carry out a free online virus scan from the link below. Allow it to fix anything it finds.

Reboot into SAFE MODE (you should know how now)

Rescan with HJT and check the following entries:

Using windows explorer locate and delete the following, if present:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\UKELCEO5\UKELCEO5.dll

Now run the cleanup program i see you have.

Reboot PC normally, rescan with HJT and post the log back

Hi Desperate,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.. IF you must keep Internet Explorer, please download the latest version.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
