disappearing memory in mac OS 9

My Mac G4 running OS 9.0 suddenly lost memory it went from 800MB to 2 MB! I restarted, rebuilt desktop and tried to check for viruses but lacked enough memory to complete the virus check. I have heard of this kind of trouble, but have no idea what is wrong.
