Hello!
I have been inundated with Spyware since yesterday. Usually, my computer is adware/spyware free, but this Aurora stuff just won’t get out of my system. I have run the official Aurora uninstaller, Lavasoft’s Adaware, NoAdware, and have followed Bazooka’s manual removal instructions. Per reading a thread on this site I also downloaded Ewido, and ran that. However, FindIt keeps saying that I have files for Aurora on my machine, and while I cannot see anything that needs removing in my HijackThis scans, a troublesome file continually reappears in my Windows file called "mwgzjunool.exe". Which, if I do not quarantine it immediately, runs a habitual Aurora pop-up.

Here is my HijackThis log, as well as the FindIt scan results. Any assistance in getting this off my machine would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Hello cyperian

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible

Sorry for the delayed response
Looks like part of the Aurora infection is still there let's get you fixed up.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Open Ewido and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup.../bridge-c11.cab

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan

Hello!
Thank you for the help. It looks like you have been swamped with Aurora questions... Here are the logs for HijackThis (the scan that I ran after I removed the files suggested) and Ewido. Just to note, the 4th file that I was supposed to delete didn't appear in the scan. However, there is another entry that looks suspicious to me. I have marked it in bold in the logfile.

Hello Cyperian

That log is clean. Does findit tell you where these bad files are?

Please do this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now scan with Adaware and let it fix anything it find
Please tell me what Adaware couldnt fix

thanks

There was nothing that Adaware couldn't clean. I also ran Ewido, Noadware, and Microsoft AntiSpyware again. After doing so, this is what FindIt's log reported...

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
The current date is: Wed 06/01/2005
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Yes, the pop-up ads have stopped, but the FindIt log worries me. Are there any programs known to trigger a false positive?

I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me with this. Thank you.

Hello cyperian

Sorry I missed your reply
Your log is clean and the findit log is clean .

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
