not bootable device window on toshiba laptop with vista

borrowed friends comp just went to open again and says "no bootable device-insert boot disc and press any key" first of all she will not have any software i no her, secondly i feel terrible was using her's while a friend was seeing what was wrong with mine, don't have $$ to repair her's now to.. its a toshiba laptop with windows vista, that's all i know help is it gone is it my fault what is can i do? i'm thinking something about recovery disc but don't know where i'm coming up with that and i know she won't have is all lost????????

May not be your fault at all. Hard disks have a limited lifespan and will eventually fail - it's just a case of when it decides to do that. It's just your bad luck it decided to fail when you borrowed it! If the hard disk has failed, recovery discs would be no use anyway - only a new hard disk will rectify that.

To establish if the hard disk has failed you need to ascertain what make it is, then download the free testing software from that maker's website. Basically, the testing software creates a bootable CD which you can create on any working computer regardless of which version of Windows it's running. Then you put that bootable CD into the cd-drive of the broken laptop and boot from it. It will run a series of tests on the drive even if Windows doesn't work.
