When I boot up, it gets stuck at the blue sky screen with the W98 Logo. I can reboot and go into Safe Mode. A similar problem happened last week, where it got past the W98 logo screen, but got stuck with a completely black screen and small white rectangle in the upper left corner. Somehow, that got fixed, but now this.

When I go into Device Manager in Safe Mode, there is a yellow question mark next to Other Devices and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is a red X next to Unknown Device. In addition, there are lots of dupes in each category, e.g., Monitors has 4 default monitors and 6 plug and play monitors, etc. Can/should I get rid of these?

Now what?

It's now several hours later - I rebooted, got the black screen, then eventually got this error response:
An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted. Change the STACKS setting in your Config.sys file and try again.

I appear to be in DOS, but no idea what directory. Directly under the error response, the cursor is blinking.

I'll be away from home July 14-18, will check again when I get back.

Sorry for the long wait as we have been very busy. It's been awhile since i have used 98 but lets see if i can help out a little. Being that you can get into Safe Mode would indicate a driver problem.
Try this..
Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.

rshaffer, in msconfig I had 'selective startup' with four options checked; unchecked all of them (had to leave either normal, diagnostic or selective checked, and chose selective) and it gets stuck in the W98 blue sky. Rebooted and did F8 to get into safe mode. Now what?

Gathered you were rather busy, what with the hacking etc.

OK is this a name brand system or a custom built?
If name brand what make and model?
If custom built what make and model is the motherboard.
Do you have a drivers disk for the motherboard or for the system?
The USB controller error could be part of the motherboard drivers.
Other Devices it is hard to tell what that is until we get back to normal mode.
Do you have a Win98 installation disk?

The problem has been solved, sort of. My PC guru had to make a trip over here anyway, so he reloaded Win98 completely (which is ok, as I only use it for old games).

From your last question, I sort of guessed I might be headed there and I don't have the driver discs, etc. Although, from now on, I certainly will. Thanks for your help, appreciate it. Hope the hackers got what's coming to them :-))

The system could have had a Repair Installation done to it. This is a little known option 98 has but not many know the correct DOS command to do it. I am glad to see you got it resolved and hope everything is working correctly now.
