I am having problems removing some spyware/malware from my system. specifically a program called aurora which keeps launching on my machine, and some ie popup web pages, which i think are related.

I have gone through the steps outlined in "before you post" and am creating a hijack this log now. I just wanted to check first if McAffe online virus scan was a good enough online scan, or if i should also run one of your recommended online scans as well.

thank you, i will be posting the log as soon as it is ready.

kimikat730,
Welcome to the GTG Forums, I will be reviewing your HJT log.
We have a few infections to clean up, so this will take a few steps.
Please read these instructions before proceeding:

You may want to print these instructions for a reference:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
Nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
SafeMode Help

Once in SafeMode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd.
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Now scan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

Thanks,

kimikat730,

Please read these instructions before proceeding:

You may want to print these instructions for a reference:

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Update these programs to the latest definition files.
Anti-Virus Protection
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot S&D

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT then click the Fixed Checked button.

Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Start CleanUp
When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
Uncheck cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea.
Click OK
Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
When asked to reboot system select No
Close CleanUp

Reboot into SafeMode and run these programs:
Anti-Virus Protection
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot S&D
Ewido Scan

Remove anything they find:

Start CleanUp
When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
Uncheck cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea.
Click OK
Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
When asked to reboot system select No
Close CleanUp

Reboot your system and post back a new HJT log and ewido log by using Add Reply

Thanks,

kimikat730,
Things are looking much better. I want to make sure that there are no lingering files hanging around, please do the following:

Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop: http://forums.net-in...=post&id=142443

1. Unzip/extract the files inside to a folder on your desktop.
2. Open the folder and run FindIt's.bat and wait for notepad to open a text file. It may take awhile so please be patient ...
3. Then post the results here along with a new HJT log by using Add Reply

Thanks,
rstones12

kimikat730,

OK, things are looking better, we still have a few things to do:
Please read through these instructions before proceeding.
You will want to print these instructions out since you will be in SafeMode and not have access to the Internet.

First download Killbox from HERE
And save it to your desktop.

Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

Once in SafeMode please run Killbox
Select "Delete on Reboot".

Copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\ICONT.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LRNXP.ICO
C:\WINDOWS\mt-uninstaller.ico

Click the red circle with the white X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion, say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click NO when it asks you to reboot.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now reboot your system and post back a new Findit log and a HJT log by using Add Reply

Thanks,
rstones12

kimikat730,
Things are looking good.
I gave you the wrong directory for the following file mt-uninstaller.ico.
You can remove it from this location.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mt-uninstaller.ico

How are things running??

Thanks,
rstones12

kimikat730,
Your log looks good.... :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera is OK as well.
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows security and critical updates.

Internet Explorer security and critical updates.
http://www.microsoft.../ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thanks,
rstones12
